Does anybody have stats on stranger trail rape?
>>
>>2728802
About one sexual assault every 3 years on the AT. Which is ridiculously low considering the numbers of people involved. Turns out white people in the woods aren't very rapey.
>>
>>2728839
Source? I'm not doubting you but that seems a tad low.
Then again. I don't even wanna fuck a willing girl after a 12 mile hike.
So I probably wouldn't have it in me to wrangle a chick for rape.
>>
>>2727099
He's probably right about his experience. I got called into the principals office multiple times in highschool for "intimidating" students that I'd never interacted with because I "looked scary". I was only 6'1 at the time and had a good reputation. If he's any taller and looks like a criminal then brain rotted urbanoids that think every other man is a rapist or murderer probably find him intimidating.
>>
>>2728839
>>2728802
I feel it's worth mentioning that those aren't the kind of statistics women are thinking of when the whole man v. bear thing kicked off. They're almost certainly thinking of the 1/3 women having been sexually assaulted stats, or other ones detailing the prevalence of domestic violence towards women

Funny enough, women don't realize that they're also more dangerous than bears by the same notion.

/out/ related? Made it on a wildland fire crew for a little while. I know it's not hard to get signed on since they take anyone that's not outright mentally retarded or paraplegic and can pass a WCT, but I pulled myself out of 10+ years of drug and alcohol addiction to get there. Moving across the country on my own was no small feat, either. I eventually got filtered out for a different medical condition I developed mid-season and can't do it anymore. I miss it every day, even if it paid like utter horseshit.

Made and lived soley out of an altoids tin survival kit for an entire week in the Appalachian boonies. Snared a couple squirrels, a raccoon, and fished for my food. I'd grown up in the sticks, but I definitely wasn't a survivalist and it was insanely challenging.

A close tie was managing a 2 day caving trip through Friars Hole in WV with pretty much no caving experience. I got wrapped up in an expedition with a professional survey group that was going super deep while I was at a VAR event and sort of negated to tell them I was inexperienced. I managed to keep up with the front of their group and they were impressed with me. Was underground for 25 hours, and they just about shit themselves at the end of the trip when I told them that was like my second time underground, kek.

Work capacity test
Bottom line basic bitch physical fitness test all wildland fire guys have to do annually. 3 mile trek in 45min or less with 45lbs of gear
Some more specialized crews have their own set of standards they require personnel to meet, just depends on where you are and who you sign on with

Only reason I use a tent is in summer for snakes, mosquitos and spiders. In winter and colder months I try just sleep under the stars.

In saying that, we don’t have big animals here that will fuck your life up.

Don’t actually know what I’d do if camping in the US. I’d be terrified of being taken by a fucking wild cat. That thought of that is just insane to me lol.

Meanwhile in Russia:

>In the winter of 2010-11, a "super pack" of wolves numbering up to 400 reportedly terrorized the Russian town of Verkhoyansk (population 1,300) in northern region of Yakutia, one of the remotest inhabited areas in the northern hemisphere. More than 30 horses were killed in just four days, according to local officials, and teams of hunters were established to patrol neighborhoods and shoot the wolves on sight. Animal experts suspicious of the claims say that wolves usually form packs of no more than 10 to 15 animals, although the particularly harsh winter may have killed off the wolves' usual prey, forcing them to attack larger animals.

Are you on a serotonin re-uptake inhibitor? Psilocin binds to serotonin receptors, anti depressants stop the break down of serotonin, so there's more free to bind with receptors, which will make them less available to psilocin. You shouldn't need 5-10g of any cube, even weak ones, unless they've been improperly stored. moisture and light will break down psilocybin and psilocin. They should be cracker dry, break easily when bent. If they're soft or there's any flexibility, they're not dry enough and you're losing active compounds. Store them in glass or mylar with a desiccant packet. Never store them in the fridge or freezer. If none of that applies to you, I'm at a loss.

britbong here. I'll save the details as they're quite mundane, though essentially I've lost my job and my place at university. I figure there's nothing tying me to this country anymore, so I've decided to go to America and be a travelling hobo/hiker. I'm somewhat an intermediate outdoorsman but wanted to ask for any suggestions from you guys on how to make my life easier/not get murdered.

> planning to stay until deported/find meaning
> will start out with about $4000
> can't drive
> will likely stay on East Coast as I'm terrified of being eaten by a grizzly
> stealth camping the majority of the trip

I'm hoping to visit some cities/towns throughout the trip. how hard is it to find stealth spots? cities are quite small here, so I don't have a reference, but is it feasible to cover the span of most cities in a day? Where's best to stash my gear for a day or so? I plan to make my money busking as I'm a skilled musician, is this a good idea?

I plan to pack some means of self defense also, though I am reluctant to purchase an actual firearm due to the different states having different laws regarding them. Would an imitation or airsoft replica suffice? Barring that I'll likely grab some pepper spray or a large knife.
>>
>>2727681
Sabre Red is the best pepper spray/cs gas gel you can buy. Works on people and dogs. You can't fly with it though, so you have to acquire it here and some states don't permit sales to the public (LEO only).

I'm a gun owner and believe you shouldn't even consider purchasing a firearm. If legal, how would you pass the internic test, you won't have legal residence. If illegal, it will catch up with you. If you produced a replica here in Chicago we would just shoot you dead without hesitation, collect our casings and move along. The clearance rate in many places is less than 15%. Don't even.

Just trust your gut instincts and avoid sketchy scenes. Unfort, I would not trust anybody entirely short term. Great folks here but all countries have their psychopaths and America is a huge place.

It should be exciting enough. Have the time of your life, kid. If there should be a snag and you need to return early, you were not defeated, you can come back again, legally or else across our open borders. Relax.
>>
>>2727756
Yeah do not try to get a fucking gun, anon. Hitchhiking and couchsurfing is about being fun, kind, and unthreatening so people want to help you. If someone looks at you and thinks "this is the kind of guy who would pull a gun on me" you have fucked up. Having a knife or hatchet in your gear is fine because those are tools, not weapons. A fake gun is quite possibly an even worse idea. Pepper spray is your best choice, outside of not getting into bad situations in the first place. You are so much more likely to get questioned by a cop for being in a park past 9pm than mugged by some gangster or violent homeless guy in an alley.

Hitchhikers are strange and mysterious to people, you're either the first one someone has met, or helping out hitchhikers is a hobby of theirs. While travelling you are inherently interesting to anyone you talk to, you can make friends with just about anyone by telling them a story and then listening to them talk about their lives. Collect their stories and you can tell them later to someone else. There's a tip: get a small journal and write down what happens to you, even just the broad strokes. Time passes and I don't remember all the people I met on my trip anymore.

Anything is fine.
Salomon, Merrell, Adidas, Aesics etc. The main reason you don't want jogging shoes, is because the fabric usually tears badly, and the durability of the outsole is bad. Alongside less grip. And that goretex usually means that you can walk trough wet bush without getting your socks wet.

Fruit thinning allows your plant to allocate its resources more efficiently. Each leaf is a source, and each fruit is a sink. If you have too many sinks, the sources will not be able to provide.

Best method to heat a greenhouse to tropical temperature the whole winter?
>>
>>2728943
Depends how much effort and cash you are willing to put into it.

The simplest would be an electric heater but that comes with really high electric bill.
For high upfront cost of good insulation like double pane glass paired with cheapest form of heat generation in your area you get smaller but still substantial heating cost.
Alternatively you could forgo the greenhouse entirely and just set up a room indoors with strong grow lights, if you live somewhere really far North with less than 6 hours of sunlight you'll likely need grow lights anyways.
You could lower your cost somewhat by using heat of decomposing manure/compost to heat your greenhouse.

Holy fucking LOL. Anywhere you can set up your bivvy and tarp I can also set up my tent and be much more comfortable and stay properly dry. Also I don't know if you have ever used a poncho for a tarp because it is so fucking not a replacement for a proper tarp. It's not large enough, the shape is dog shit, there's no proper guyout points or strong pockets to hold poles.

4 weeks or so but it was almost all car camping with some buddies so I was never lonely. I think others are right that on a longer trip you don't feel as much pressure to cram all of your activities into a short window so fatigue isn't as much of a problem. I personally didn't feel gross but by the end I was conscious of the fact that we probably reeked and just didn't know. Looking back I guess the only thing I was missing was some meals that weren't cooked on a camp stove.

Spent about 8 months bouncing around New England in a tent and, very occasionally, a lean-to. Doing conservation work. Team would live out of a base camp and hike into worksites. We went into town to buy food but lived out of tents in primitive sites the rest of the time. I miss the woods but I don't miss those fucking black flies.
>>
i don't go out for more than 3 days because i start missing my cat
>>
>>2724112
Underrated.

>I live in New England, birthplace of faggot ass Lyme Disease, ticks are everywhere innawoods
>Already had Lyme twice in my youth, never want that shit again

I bought a pair of $100 pants from Duluth that were branded as "no bug/tick" which according to the label is some proprietary Permethrin infusion.
>catch tick
>put it on pants
>watch it walk all over for several minutes, completely unbothered by the "kills bugs and ticks guaranteed!" pants
>return pants because they clearly do not fucking work

So were these pants just trash? Or is Permethrin ineffective?

What is the best way to protect from these little fuckers? Between hiking, mushrooming, and camping i'm off trail at least 75% of the time essentially bushwhacking through trees and brush.

Ticks are difficult because they'll latch on to you because you walk through a bush they sit on. They're not like skeeters that will hunt you down and avoid you if you have repellents. Pesticide infused clothes aren't 100% safe from ticks so you should still do a tick sweep every time you're taking a break. Time is the most important factor for ticks because they take a long time to pick a spot to dig in.
>>
>>2727761
I've lived in new england for my entire life, but I took a trip to Georgia this spring and the ticks there terrified me. I kneeled on some dead palmetto fronds for a moment to catch a skink and when I stood up I found 2 dozen of the smallest pinhead ticks I'd ever seen on my pants, along with a healthy serving of larger lone star ticks. Ticks never really bothered me because they were easy to spot, but these ones had me scared because of how small and numerous they were.

Carp are easy. Go to walmart, buy a can of great value corn, go to the fishing section, find split shot and a pack of #4 or #6 bait holder hooks, then go to the river.
Grab a fist full of corn and throw it in the water (assuming it's legal in your area, some places prohibit chumming) and while that's soaking tie on your bait holder hook and affix a split shot 18 inches up from there. Thread corn on kernel by kernel until you've covered the entire hook, I like to put so many it's starting to get on the line too. Gently lob it in to the corn field and wait.

>>
>>2727738
Keeping the Tropen outside is like wearing your baselayer outside of your hardshell.
The Tropen is a warm weather bag. It's less concerned with keeping out drafts and allows water vapor to easily travel through it. Keeping it inside the bag allows the Tropen to more effectively add to the insulation of the Defense 4.
The Defense 4 should be sized to fit the Tropen inside of it, so if it's too tight, then you ordered too small of a size or you're trying to bring too much stuff into the bag with you.
